knowing someone means learning something

Bernard was born on August 20, 1996 in Zambia and came to the United States when he was 2 weeks old. He is known by friends and family as a ‘teddy bear’ because he is so warm and loving. In school, he’s very studious and gets good grades. His favorite subject currently in school is science. His mother, Bridget, describes Bernard as, “very easy to get along with. I couldn’t have asked for a better son. He is the man of the house and is very protective of his sister and me.” His nickname at home is L.B., which stands for ‘lil Bernard. He loves to play video and computer games and enjoys reading.

Summer 2008 was Bernard’s first year at Camp Kindle. He was born HIV positive and he looks forward to sharing his story to help others.

Q&A with Bernard

Q: What are some challenges or differences in your life because of HIV/AIDS?
A: Taking meds is a challenge. Also, HIV keeps me from doing fun things sometimes. I have not been able to play a lot of sports because I get made fun of or excluded.

Q: If you could wish for anything in the world, what is your wish for 2009?
A: My wish for ’09 is to get to have fun.
